gifts for a babyshower
What’s the best/ most useful babyshower gift that you received?

A friend’s haveing a shower and we’d like to get something REALLY good & useful. Already got a few things that they had registered for, but would like something else. Any excellent hints?

A jumbo size pack of disposable diapers. Not something lasting that they will always remember Aunt Tillie gave them for the baby. But useful, you betcha! I sometimes like to give diapers and then something cute to go with it, like a baby toy or board book that they will have long after the diapers are gone.

Scattered among poor, desolate farms, the clans of the Uplands possess gifts. Wondrous gifts: the ability--with a glance, a gesture, a word--to summon animals, bring forth fire, move the land. Fearsome gifts: They can twist a limb, chain a mind, inflict a wasting illness. The Uplanders live in constant fear that one family might unleash its gift against another. Two young people, friends since childhood, decide not to use their gifts. One, a girl, refuses to bring animals to their death in the hunt. The other, a boy, wears a blindfold lest his eyes and his anger kill.In this beautifully crafted story, Ursula K. Le Guin writes of the proud cruelty of power, of how hard it is to grow up, and of how much harder still it is to find, in the world's darkness, gifts of light.

This lyrically written YA fantasy, by the critically acclaimed author of the Earthsea series, concerns the nature of responsibility to one's family, one's abilities, and oneself. The people of the Uplands use their psychic powers, or gifts, as weapons in their endless petty feuds. Sixteen-year-old Orrec's power, the ability to undo, or destroy, both inanimate and living things at a glance is seemingly uncontrollable, so he has willingly blindfolded himself for the past three years. Meanwhile, Gry, Orrec's friend since childhood and the woman whom he longs to marry, refuses to use her gift of animal communication to call beasts to be slaughtered during the hunt. Together, the two wonder if there is a way to use their gifts positively, and whether there is more of value to each of them than simply their magic.

Having a baby with Down syndrome is not something most parents would willingly choose. Yet many who travel this path discover rich, unexpected rewards along the way. In this candid and poignant collection of personal stories, sixty-three mothers describe the gifts of respect, strength, delight, perspective, and love, which their child with Down syndrome has brought into their lives. The contributors to this collection have diverse personalities and perspectives, and draw from a wide spectrum of ethnicity, world views, and religious beliefs. Some are parenting within a traditional family structure; some are not. Some never considered terminating their pregnancy; some struggled with the decision. Some were calm at the time of diagnosis; some were traumatized. Some write about their pregnancy and the months after giving birth; some reflect on years of experience with their child. Their diverse experiences point to a common truth: The life of a child with Down syndrome is something to celebrate. These women have something to say -- not just to other mothers but to all of us.This book offers crucial information and perspective to pregnant women facing a pre or post-natal Down Syndrome diagnosis. GIFTS is especially timely given the new 2007 guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), which recommends that all women, regardless of age, receive screening for Down syndrome. Statistics show that most of these diagnoses result in abortion; if more women are screened the fear is that there will be fewer babies born with Down syndrome. The question is how informed are these decisions? If better information were available to women -- a copy of GIFTS, counseling that`s more up-to-date -- would the trend be different? GIFTS has already garnered interest from writers and Down syndrome advocates who are concerned about the lack of comprehensive information provided to women facing a pre-natal Down syndrome diagnosis. THIS IS THE STORY OF MY LIFE, HOW I MET JESUS. I KNOW SOME OF THE THINGS ARE SIMPLE AND INSIGNIFICANT, BUT THEY ARE ALL TRUE. MANY WILL HAVE DIFFERENT INSIGHTS, BUT WHAT YOU WILL READ ABOUT ARE MY INSIGHTS. THEY ARE EVERYDAY EXPERIENCES ON SMALL THINGS. IF YOU THINK JESUS IS NOT INTERESTED IN YOUR EVERYDAY HABITS, THINK AGAIN. FROM MY EXPERIENCE IN WALKING WITH MY SAVIOR, HE IS INTERESTED IN EVERYTHING YOU DO REGARDLESS HOW SMALL OR LARGE. YOU WILL NOT READ A BOOK LIKE THIS EVERYDAY. IT IS UNIQUE.
