tummy sleeping baby…and worried mom!?

My 6 1/2 month old little girl has begun to flip over in her crib from her back to her tummy. She then gets stuck…I think she flips and wiggles sideways so that half the time she ends up wedged funny on the side corner of the crib and can’t get unstuck. During floor play she rolls really well from tummy to back and the other way but in her crib it wakes her up several times a nap and during nightime. Today I actually found her sleeping like that and it scared me to death….I was worried she couldn’t flip back because of how she had wedged herself.
I know, I know….we all slept on out tummies and were fine. BUT I’m a first time mom and so nervous with my daughter sleeping that way when she isn’t used to it and moves around so much. Any advice would be great! Also…she sleeps in a “sleep sack” (wearable blanket) so she has no covers to get tangled in, but I wonder if it makes it harder for her to flip herself back that way. Thanks!

I am going through this now. My son is 6 1/2 months as well, and just tonight we had a battle with it. He was having a hard time going to sleep and he kept flipping over and scooting backwards so he got himself backed into a corner. He hasn’t discovered he can fall asleep on his tummy yet but he does love sleeping on his side. I do respond to his crying so If I go in there and see him up on all fours I’ll pick him up and place him back in the crib on his back and help soothe him back to sleep.

They say that part of this 6-12 month age is problem solving and cause and effect, so even though she is supposed to be sleeping, she is still taking in all these new things she can do. All the movement does cause sleep disruptions. Have faith that it will not last forever and look at it this way—you are watching your daughter learn something new. She is acquiring a new skill that she just happens to practice at night.

As for the tummy sleeping, once they can roll over it’s safe for the tummy sleeping, just continue to put her down on her back and I would discontinue using the sleep sack….
